Wireless - The Right solution in the right way.

The proper planning and configuration of a WLAN has never been more important than now in these days of wireless controller solutions that fully integrate with the existing network infrastructure and are expected to support real-time applications such as voice as well as data. This increasing complexity of design now has to be provided by a team whose skills go way beyond those of simple technologies such as VLAN, QoS and PoE, and increasingly, knowledge of applications including DHCP and radius authentication.

All wireless designs however stand or fall on the physical basics, providing the optimum number of access points – too many can be as bad as too few – and their placement. Get this part wrong and things tend to go south pretty quickly. These days there are a number of software tools available to help in this planning that allow you to model the site and simulate AP placement. This software however is only as accurate as the information fed into it and takes little account of the live environment. For these reasons CodeMove always recommend a physical on-site survey where actual radio readings can be taken to define accurate AP cell coverage and sources of interference.

From here an audit of the cabled network and switches can be undertaken together with the additional cabling and power requirements for each AP, and a report drafted with all this information that can go to the designers of the final solution. With this information in place recommendations can be made on vendor equipment that has the features and performance that meets or exceeds the customer’s requirement.

While the physical installation of AP’s and cabling should be relatively straightforward, the commissioning of modern wireless controllers is often more complex and requires vendor specific training in addition to an in-depth understanding of many technologies. Working with the customers IT staff is very important at this stage to integrate the WLAN into the customers network, and then to be able to offer the necessary training and support to the customer so that they can get the most from the solution provided.
